Checking Subtraction Using Addition
We can check whether the answer of subtraction is correct we will add the difference of the two numbers with the number that was subtracted.
After performing the addition we will the number from which the number was subtracted.
Let us consider the following example;
Subtract 36 from 75. and check the result
We will perform subtraction as shown below
75 - 36 = ?
We will perform the required operation
As we have to subtract 36 from 75 we will regroup 75 as we can not subtract 6 from 5.
On taking 1 ten from tens place we get 6 in the tens place and 15 in the ones place.
So 15 ones - 6 ones = 9 ones
and 6 tens - 3 tens = 3 tens
Hence the answer will be 39
Now we check the answer
We will add the difference of the two numbers that is 39 to the number that was subtracted that is 36 as shown above
So 39 and 36 are added .
The answer is 75.
This is the the number from which 36 was subtracted.
This shows that the subtraction has been performed correctly
